May 2012

Our thanks to everyone who donated to the Post Drive on Saturday May 12, 2012. Tons of donated food was collected by the Postal Carriers and distributed to the various food pantries in Onondaga County. Also remember to let the Postal Carriers know how much you appreciate the work that they do and that the food drive does make a different to the most vulnerable in our community.

There are more than 90 food pantries in Onondaga County, 70 food pantries are assoicated with the IFC( Interreligious Food Consortium). We have a personal relationship with the volunteers at the food pantries as well as the people who rely on their assistance. We are available to listen to their concerns, offer support and help keep their shelves stocked.

We believe that the volunteers from the food pantries are fighting the battle of hunger in our community. It is not about handing out food monthly, but the relationships that are formed when someone comes for help. A kind word can make a tremendous difference to someone who struggles with life’s every day pressures.

When the IFC asks for donations we want people to aware that they can make a difference no matter how small or large that donation, that donation is important. It is our way of reminding people that hunger is an issue in our community.

The IFC was formed thirty years ago for the purpose of uniting and networking the various emergency food pantries in Onondaga County. When an individual or family is in need of assistance, they may call the IFC to be referred to an appropriate food pantry or meal site. In addition to referrals, the IFC assists pantries with program support, financial assistance and food at no cost.

At the IFC we receive donations of food from families, religious organizations and corporations. This food is passed on free of charge to a network of 70 food pantries and meal sites. Many of the food pantries appreciate being able to come to our office to help stock their shelves when they do not have the financial resources to pay shared maintenance fees or to purchase food from a local dealer.

           Just a reminder that……..

The Interreligious Food Consortium is a grassroots movement to help end hunger in Onondaga County. Currently we work with 70 food pantries in Onondaga County. We solicit, collect and distribute donated food to the various food pantries in Syracuse and Onondaga County to keep their shelves stocked at no cost.

We provide a referral program for those who are in need of an emergency food program. If necessary, we can contact the pantry coordinators for emergency situations. When people are in need we can connect them to the appropriate resources.

So many have done so much to help us make a difference in our community!

Syracuse Partners Against Hunger is an adhoc group that includes individuals, businesses and organizations in Onondaga County who contribute their time and resources to help the IFC provide the personnel and systems in place to gather food and get it to where it is needed.

Our list of donors is many and we truly appreciate their support!

The need in our community continues to grow. Please know that whatever it may be, your donation will help us to carry through with our promise to make sure those who need emergency food receive it. We want to make sure that the services are provided to the most vulnerable in our community.

Donations can be mailed to IFC 222 Teall Ave. Syracuse, New York 13210 or through Pay Pal under DONATIONS. Please feel free to contact our office at 474-8855. You are always welcome to visit our office.

Hunger does not discriminate and affects all populations from young, to the elderly, people with disabilities, and the working poor. Hunger and the problems attributed to being hungry continue to increase. This year is especially worrisome for many people in our community. Somtimes we forget that hunger is a year round problem.

Thank you for your generosity

Michele Jordan, Executive Director
